We wanted to write this statement to our patients to shed some light on the recently released study in the Journal of Cancer this month. The study reported that dental x-rays are associated with an increased risk of the development of non-cancerous brain tumors. The findings from the study have also recently been reported in NY Times and Boston Globe.

Although the study has some limitations, it is also valuable in stressing the point that minimizing radiation exposure should always be a priority. We are happy and pleased to inform you that we have followed the guidelines for minimization of radiation exposure at our practice for years.  We take x-rays based on risks versus benefits in preventing incidence of cavities and gum disease. We also defer x-rays if we feel patients are at low risk for developing cavities and gum disease.

Another important aspect in lowering radiation exposure is the implementation of digital x-rays at our office. The digital x-rays have 90% less radiation exposure than conventional x-rays. Therefore comparatively, it would take almost a decade of receiving routine digital bitewing x-rays (typically taken every 18 to 24 months) to receive the same level of radiation exposure you would get from just one conventional x-ray.
